Inability to relax the muscles of the stomach and intestines.

2. Achalasia
This is a disorder of esophageal peristalsis characterized by degeneration of the ganglion cells of the lower esophagus. This results in the failure of the relaxation of the cardiac sphincter during the passage of food. There is a potential of developing carcinoma of the esophagus in 5 to 10 % of such patients.

3. Achalasia of the cardia
A medical term describing the inability to relax the sphincter muscle separating the esophagus and stomach while swallowing.
