A substance which can be broken down into simpler components by the process of catabolism (a metabolic process), so that energy is released and can be used by the body.

2. Catabolite gene activator protein (CAP)
A regulatory protein that triggers the transcription of gene s that generate the enzyme s bacteria need to use nutrients when glucose is absent.

3. Catabolite repression
A positive repression process in cellular transcription , in which RNA polymerase binds poorly to the operon 's promoter . The binding of CRP and cAMP to the promoter causes RNA polymerase to bind more effectively and initiate transcription. Active constituents of this process are cAMP and CRP .
