An increase in the expression of a gene due to the activity of a regulatory protein .

2. Induction of a lysogenic phage
Causing a bacteriophage (a virus which attacks bacteria ) which has been lying dormant within the genome of a hosting bacterium (a lysogen ic virus) to reactivate and finish its lytic cycle - destroying the bacterium in the process. The most common cause of this is damage to the bacterium's DNA .
