1. Intussusception
Intussusception is the telescoping of one segment of bowel into an adjacent segment. It is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in children under 2 years of age. Complications include pain, dehydration, and infarction of the bowel. In about half of the cases, a barium enema is successful in reducing the intussusception; if not, surgery is required.
