1. Nonketotic diabetic coma
This is a type of diabetic coma due to severe hyperglycemia (over 600 mg/dL; 35 mmol/L). Ketosis may not be present. High serum osmolality (greater than 310 mosm/kg. versus normal of 290 mosm/kg) results in diuresis (which causes dehydration), lethargy, confusion, and coma.
