Any of many natural or partly synthetic antibiotic s that work against a wide range of Gram-positive bacteria (such as streptococci ), some Gram-positive bacteria, and some pathogen ic fungi . Penicillin, which is produced by fungi in the genus Penicillium, works by interfering with microbes' ability to sythesize peptidoglycan .
