1. Thalidomide
A water-soluble drug originally used as a sedative, tranquilizer and "morning sickness" medication (mainly in Western Germany and Britain from 1960-1962) until it was discovered it causes severe birth defects, mainly missing limbs or missing parts of limbs. Currently, it is being re-engineered to create new drugs to treat inflammation and immune system disorders.
