1. Animal cell culture
Mammalian cells are fragile and harder to grow than other cell types, but their large-scale culturing is an economic boon because it allows for the production of protein s that are otherwise difficult/expensive/unethical to extract from living organisms. There are two basic ways of culturing animal cells: * The cells are immobilized on a substrate and then perfused with culture medium ; * The cells are in a free suspension which is very gently mixed and aerated.

2. Anther culture
A plant culturing technique in which immature pollen is made to divide and grow into tissue (either callus or embryonic tissue) in either a liquid medium or on solid media. Pollen-containing anther s are removed from a flower and put in a culture medium; some microspheres survive and develop into tissue. If embryonic tissue develops, it's put in a medium favorable for shoot and root development; if it's callus tissue, it's put in a solution of hormones that will spur it to differentiate and develop shoot and root tissue.

3. Blood agar
An agar -based medium which has been enriched with sterilized, defibrinated blood (sheep, rabbit or horse). It is used for primary plating and sub culturing, especially to determine bacterial hemolysis .

4. Petri dish (petri plate)
A common piece of laboratory equipment which may be made of glass or transparent plastic. It is a round, shallow dish with a flat bottom and vertical sides. It comes with a lid which is slightly larger and thus fits over the sides of the dish. Petri dishes are generally used to hold agar growth media for the purpose of culturing cell s (such as bacteria ).
